Skiing USA

The Beaver Creek Gondola is just a few steps from our Lodge

Whilst the World Ski Championship programme includes runs at Beaver Creek for it’s challenging Downhill Cup Race, almost  half of Beaver Creeks' skiing is rated excellent for intermediates, with an additional twenty percent rated for beginners. Even beginners can experience the thrill of skiing down from the towering 11,440 foot summit. Families, especially those with young skiers, will appreciate the dedicated "Family Ski Trail" areas, where children (and their parents) can ski without the fear of being flattened by some kamikaze on skis. For the rest there are superb black diamond and double black diamond challenging runs including the new Stone Creek Chutes—180 acres of short steep gladed runs for expert skiers and snowboarders

Skiers who prefer the delights of touring rather than downhill can ride the Strawberry park Express chairlift to the network of beginner and intermediate trails at McCoy Park, ski all morning, and still meet family and friends for a trail side lunch.

Beaver Creek stretches across five rather distinct mountain linked areas. Each is serviced by a network of chair lifts. One can follow the sun throughout the day, skiing the runs off of Centennial Express and the Westfall chair lift before moving to Grouse Mountain with some great European style runs and on to the trails off of Larkspur lift before lunch. In the afternoon take the Strawberry Park Express quad chair to the Elkhorn lift for an easy traverse to the recently opened Bachelor Gulch trails before catching the last rays of sunshine at Arrowhead Mountain.

Favourite runs include  Grouse Mountain:  the quad chair that tops off at 10,600 feet,  and the Strawberry Park quad, which passes over the mountain-side house of former president Gerald Ford. The runs on Grouse Mountain boast some of the steepest terrain on offer as well as some awesome, glade skiing.  The intermediate runs -- Stacker and Pitchfork -- offered a chance for some easy, fast cruising, while on the sides one could still find six inches or so of ungroomed powder.

There is a shuttle service that runs between Vail and Beaver Creek so it is possible to have the best of both worlds in the same day -- the glitter and dazzle of Vail and the more relaxed skiing at Beaver Creek & Arrowhead.
